Wow, what a great start to 2012!

In the span of four weeks we have had Duke Roufus and Big John McCarthy teaching at CFC Gym. What an unbelieveable experience for all students that attended!

The CFC Gym has also installed a brand new, custom built, 77 foot long cage wall. What a beautiful piece of training equipment to improve our grappling and MMA programs!

We have more equipment and guest instructors coming soon to Winnipeg’s #1 Martial Arts Training Center so stay tuned!

More big news from the CFC Gym!

We are very happy to announce that BJJ black belt, MMA Pioneer, and legendary referee Big John McCarthy will be teaching at CFC Gym on Wednesday February 8, 2012.

This No Gi and MMA seminar will run from 6-8 pm and will include a question and answer session. All past and present CFC Gym grappling and kickboxing students are welcome at NO COST!

I am very excited to tell everyone about what is happening at CFC Gym with our new Grappling instructors and programs. This is our incentive program to kick things off!

Incentive Program for Grappling

BJJ (Gi and NoGi), Wrestling, and Judo

If you currently train Grappling at CFC Gym:

Purple Belts and Brown Belts – you will receive a 6 month complimentary grappling membership.

White Belts and Blue Belts- you will receive a 3 month complimentary grappling membership.

If you currently train Kickboxing at CFC Gym:

We want you to become a complete Martial Artist – you will receive a 3 month complimentary grappling membership.

During this transition:

Any current BJJ student that just needs a temporary place to roll, will be allowed to continue using the mat space,with no obligations or contracts needed until your new facility is up and running.

Fees and Prices:

The price for Grappling memberships will be $85.00 per month, which includes: BJJ – (Gi and NoGi), Wrestling, and Judo.

The price for Kickboxing memberships will remain at $95.00 per month.

The price for MMA memberships (Grappling & Kickboxing) will be $125.00 per month.

You can combine or mix and match any and all classes offered at CFC Gym.

The Grappling Program:

The Grappling program Coaching Staff will be:

BJJ Black Belts Joe Doerksen and Tino Guzzardi.

BJJ Brown Belts Jerin Valel (with Curt McKinnon substituting as required).

 Judo Black Belt Airton Nakamura will be in charge of his Judo program.

The Grappling program will run independently and will be built upon a TEAM Environment.

I have some very exciting news! My long time coach and friend Duke Roufus, a four time World kickboxing champion, will be teaching at the CFC Gym on January 10th to the 12th.

Duke is one of the most sought after trainers in the UFC and is considered by many in the martial arts industry as one of the top trainers in the world.

Duke has been instrumental in building the curriculum at the CKMTC/CFC Gym since 2002 and he has taught at our gym countless times over the years.

Duke has spent years creating a belt system to help students set goals and see progress in their training. We are proud to incorporate Duke’s belt system into our kickboxing program at CFC Gym. All students will now have dry-fit belt shirts as part of their uniforms.

Duke and I will be assessing all CFC Gym kickboxing students and placing them into their respective belts while he is in Winnipeg. There will be no charge for the belt assessment and training with Duke.
Since the CFC Gym is the Canadian affiliate school of Roufusport, CFC Gym students will have the oppurtunity to train with Duke Roufus multiple times throughout the year at no cost. This is yet another great privilege of training at the CFC Gym!

I have finally recovered from CFC 7. WOW…what a night!

CFC 7 was our biggest card to date and there was some fantastic fights. Over 20 fights in total including the professional show and the amateur undercard. That is just unheard of in Canada!

The Canadian Fighting Championship is proud to be pioneers in the Canadian fight scene. We strive to build and promote the best Canadian fighters possible, starting with the children who competed on our undercard at CFC 7 to the numerous UFC veterans that have fought for our organization throughout the years.

At CFC 7, we proved to everyone in the Canadian fight scene who has the biggest live audience, the best live production, the best crowd, the best matched fights, and who the #1 Canadian fight promotion really is – and you can take that to the bank!

My promoter’s hat is being hung up for the time being, and now it is time to get back to work at the gym. Back to what I love and what I do best – teaching martial arts and training fighters.

In the main event, Gregory Choplin took the IKF North American Middleweight title home to France as he stopped Winnipeg’s Dave Zuniga in the main event of the night.

Peguis First Nation’s Chris Stranger controlled the action in the semi-main event and took home a unanimous decision victory in the semi-main event over Winnipeg’s Lindsey Hawkes.

Top Canadian Bantamweight Eric Perez stayed perfect in his Canadian Fighting Championship fights. He increased his CFC record to a perfect 6-0 by submitting Alberta’s Tony Bibby by Rear Naked Choke in the second round.

There were plenty of highlight reel stoppages at the fights. Randy Rowe and Kyle Oliveira dispatched their opponents with quick first round knockouts. Not to be outdone, Dwight Sutherland tapped out his opponent in only 15 seconds.

The night also featured many exciting exhibition and amateur bouts. The athletes, including the many Canadian Fighting Center students, showing great skill, technique, and sportsmanship in their fights.

Last week, the CFC learned that Cyrus Washington may not be able to fight in Winnipeg due to past issues.  Instead of cancelling the main event title fight, the CFC burned up the phone lines and flew in a backup for Cyrus Washington just in case.  Good thing they did because Washington was unable to get into Canada.

What a replacement they got!  Usually, late replacements are of the lesser quality than the person they are replacing.  Not in the CFC!

Gregory Choplin will now be challenging Dave Zuniga for the IKF – North American title in the main event of CFC 7. Choplin will be a much tougher opponent for Winnipeg’s Zuniga on Saturday, September 10th.  The native of France is a two time World Muay Thai champion!

Winnipeg’s “Dangerous” Dave Zuniga will have his hands full trying to deal with his world champion opponent while trying to claim the IKF North American Middleweight title.

Fans should come out and support Zuniga in his attempt to win a North American title at CFC 7 on Saturday, September 10th. Tickets are available at http://canadianfighting.com/tickets.

Main eventing the evening will be Winnipeg’s ‘Dangerous’ Dave Zuniga in a championship fight. After sharpening his Muay Thai game in Thailand, Zuniga returns to fight in front of his home audience for the first time in two years. Zuniga will face Detroit’s Cyrus Washington for the IKF North American Middleweight title.

Who is the best Manitoban MMA fighter in the Welterweight division? The CFC 7 semi-main event will answer this question as the ultra-tough Chris Stranger from Peguis, Manitoba will take on the technically superior Lindsey Hawkes.

In other MMA action, a Winnipeg fighter will look to stay unbeaten in Canadian Fighting Championship competition. Eric Perez, 5-0 in the CFC, will face Tony Bibby in hopes to remain unbeaten. Perez always brings fans to their feet with his electrifying performances at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. This promises to be another stand up war and one of Perez’ stiffest tests to date.

In addition to those three great fights, fans can witness Duke Roufus‘ protege Sergio Pettis‘ professional MMA debut. Roufus was voted trainer of the year in 2010 and Sergio is one of his top students. Sergio is the brother of former WEC champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and will follow in his brother’s MMA footsteps in the CFC ring on September 10th. Both Anthony Pettis and Duke Roufus will be in attendance for Sergio’s first pro fight.

Fans can pick up tickets from http://canadianfighting.com/tickets, but you better do it soon. Table tickets are being snapped up, but there are still general admission seats available for $25. Remember that fans 16 and older can attend.

The card will be a mix of Muay Thai and MMA. It will also feature professional and amateur fights. Fans can watch the amateur fights starting at 4pm on September 10th. The main card featuring 11 professional fights will commence at 8pm.

Other Manitoba fighters scheduled to appear include Serge Rochon, Dwight Sutherland, Luis Cepeda, Mark Durant, Travis Gervais, David Quangvan, Jon Henderson, and Kyle Oliveira.
