Hello everyone,

The whole city of Winnipeg is pumped for UFC 161 at the MTS Centre June 15! Everyone seems to be an MMA fan now and I have given almost ten interviews this week on the subject already!

This is the biggest news for our city since the Winnipeg Jets returned! When you include all the millions of people watching on pay per view, it will be the biggest event ever held in our city. UFC 161 will put Winnipeg on the world map for MMA!

Now, for me and every MMA fan in Winnipeg, UFC 161 will not be complete without Winnipeg’s own Joe Doerksen on the show. Joe Doerksen is a Canadian MMA legend! With 49 wins and 9 appearances in UFC to his credit, Doerksen is the most experienced MMA fighter in Canada. It would be well-deserved based on his current results as he is on a two fight winning streak, including one over UFC vet Kalib Starnes, with both fights being named Fight of the Night by Top MMA News. Joe has fought at home many times for CFC over the years and the Winnipeg crowd loves him! No one deserves to be on the show more that Joe Doerksen!

Lastly, it has been a fantastic start to 2013 for CFC Gym! Our classes are full every night with people working hard to reach their goals! Everyone at the CFC Gym is excited to welcome legendary fighter and coach, my longtime friend and brother, Duke Roufus back to the Canadian Fighting Center on September 27, 28, and 29!

Duke will be running a Kickboxing and MMA workshop this week and he says that he has some new tricks up his sleeve for this time around. I, for one, can’t wait! I remember Duke teaching CFC Gym students “The Showtime Kick” back in 2008, and later the kick was made famous by Anthony Pettis.

It’s hard to believe that the CFC Gym has been an official affiliate of Roufusport for ten years and we have continued to strive and grow as martial artists that entire time.

Roufusport is ahead of the pack in the fight game, come down and see for yourself!

What a great night of fights last Saturday at The Winnipeg Convention Centre! Our CFC Gym went 4-0 as our fighters Joe Doerksen, Agostino DeNatale, Jon Henderson and Mark Durant were all victorious at Aggression Fighting Championship 11.

Joe Doerksen, in his post-fight interview, says he will give one private lesson to all students who sign up at CFC Gym before Oct 1. Now that is a great offer from one of the top mixed martial artists in Canada! Thank you Doerksen, that’s just awesome!

CFC Class News

• Our 6:30 am Combat Fitness class is on Monday-Thursday and is getting great reviews from the participants. Everyone is welcome to come on down and try out a free week.

• Our Judo instructor Airton Nakamura has added a Kid’s Judo class at 10:30 am Saturday mornings! Thank you Naka, the kids will love it!

• Adult Judo will be on Monday and Thursday at 7:00 pm.

• Kid’s martial arts classes are now at 5:00 pm Monday-Thursday.

The Canadian Fighting Center will be expanding our business hours starting Monday, September 10. We will now be opening the doors at 6 am from Monday to Thursday. At this time, we are starting a new fitness program!

This new class will be a Combat Fitness class that will be held Monday to Thursday from 6:30am to 7:15 am.

Combat Fitness will be a 45 minute high intensity workout that is designed to burn fat, build muscle, improve agility and speed through plyometric/isometric/core strength/kettle bells/agility drills/cardo vascular conditioning.

The Canadian Fighting Center is pleased to add Gabriel Alves to the CFC Gym staff. Gabriel will be running the morning programing.

Gabriel has been working as a personal trainer for the last five years and has the following credentials:

Kinesiology Major at the University of Manitoba
CAN-FIT PRO – Personal Training Specialist
ACE Certified Personal Trainer
CPR/AED Certified

There is no extra cost for fulltime CFC Gym members to take the Combat Fitnes class. Non-members can enroll for a fee of $225 for three months.

It’s been some time since the last blog and quite a lot has been happening at the Canadian Fighting Center, so I thought a summer update was in order.

New Mats = Safer and More Diverse Training!
At the Canadian Fighting Center, we are always extremely concerned with the welfare of our students.  In order to further improve the level of safety for all levels of students, we ordered custom built wall mats a while ago.  I am happy to report that these mats have finally arrived!

These specially made mats have padding that is 2″ thick and they have been custom fit to cover every wall inside our 5000 sq foot  training area.  In addition to the increased safety for all students, we have also increased the variety of training drills we can perform due to the additional 200 linear feet of wall mats to our cage wall.

With this upgrade to the school and the highly qualified instructors running classes,  there is no doubt that the CFC Training Center is the #1 MMA gym in Winnipeg and one of the top gyms in Canada!

Manitoba MMA News
On July 28, the CFC gym will be sending a team of fighters to The Pas to compete on Elite Fighting Championship: Rez Warz.  Representing the CFC Training Center will be Agostino DeNatale, Mark Durant, David Quangvan, Vince Blixt, Jon Henderson,Vyron Phillips, and Travis Gervais.

As well as The Pas show, there are a couple other events that may be scheduled for Winnipeg in the near future.  I will have more news on some big fight event’s scheduled for this fall coming soon – so stay tuned!

Wow, what a great start to 2012!

In the span of four weeks we have had Duke Roufus and Big John McCarthy teaching at CFC Gym. What an unbelieveable experience for all students that attended!

The CFC Gym has also installed a brand new, custom built, 77 foot long cage wall. What a beautiful piece of training equipment to improve our grappling and MMA programs!

We have more equipment and guest instructors coming soon to Winnipeg’s #1 Martial Arts Training Center so stay tuned!
